The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: How a Person I Barely Knew Helped Me Secure the Position That Changed My Life

During the late 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to Europe with a friend. Because my travel mate was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had booked a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a big multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the canteen, where we got some food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I my profession was, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – right next door to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I ought to seek a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that night. The engineering student approached me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but right away informed my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a place where everything seems achievable – she said: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for three years. A perk of the job was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his identity, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in numerous aspects. I would never have had the bravery or self-belief to approach someone at an elite institution and seek a position. And, I had always wanted to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

What's more, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
