The star has given the full amount of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which works to protect the United Kingdom's independent concert spaces.

The star was awarded the cheque on October 16 as his third album People Watching was named the outstanding release of the past year.

He has opted to hand the money over to the trust, in recognition of the essential function local spots played in his initial steps.

"I couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the performances I played around the region, and beyond, when I was starting out," remarked Fender. "These spaces are renowned, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – approximately 16 percent of the entire UK sector.

In the last year, top acts like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to support the industry, by adding a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which supports independent venues.

Fender also took part, generating over £100k on his recent tour to help 38 local spots across the UK.

The donation helped locations that were confronting imminent closure due to challenges stemming from water damage, blazes and bereavements, as well as permit problems, court cases and noise complaints.

Additional spaces received monetary aid in modernizing amenities and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted performers and audiences.

"The concept that funds from shows in large arenas helps the independent spots, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has stated.

And 1994 winners they gave their award to a MS organization after a friend was diagnosed the condition.

"The victory was quite enough," remarked artist the singer. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the cake. So our success affected another person's life."

In the past week, the trust revealed it had rescued two small stages in the South East, by placing them under community ownership.

The first in the city and the other in Bristol were bought under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is supported by Arts Council England and music fans who acquire "ownership units" in the properties.
