Approximately 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Police state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Police then located multiple other smeared automobiles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state preliminary tests indicate the liquid was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; authorities are presently not aware of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the residents for details.
A senior official stated the incident rendered him speechless and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the death of nine victims by a assailant focusing on residents of immigrant origin in February 2020.
